Michael Sørensen

Henning Larsen / North America / Partner, Architect MMA

Michael joined Henning Larsen in 2006 and was appointed partner in 2016. His extensive international profile includes design direction of projects in Sweden, Germany, Ireland, the United States, and Canada. Henning Larsen’s internationalization efforts include the establishment of a stronger presence in the North American market. Michael is playing a key role in the realization of this ambition. He has headed competition victories for Etobicoke Civic Center in Toronto, Carl H. Lindner College of Business in Cincinnati and Minneapolis City Hall.

The idea of interaction between teachers and students is a core aspect in all of Henning Larsen’s educational buildings. Michael has a strong understanding of the demands that will be faced by the workforce of tomorrow. At Lindner College, this insight is evident in the synergy between education, innovation, and research made possible by the college’s West Campus. Michael has also been instrumental in the Danish-based educational building projects, Lillebælt Business Academy in Odense and Campus Roskilde.

His expertise also includes a thorough understanding of the current evolution of municipal institutions such as city halls. The Scandinavian ideals of transparency, democracy, and civic engagement are clear in projects where Michael has served as Design Director, including Uppsala City Hall (Sweden) and Etobicoke Civic Center (Toronto). All of Henning Larsen’s municipal buildings seek to engage in dialog with members of the local community, inviting them into the heart of municipal government. Public passages, exhibition spaces, and cafes makes these buildings attractive destinations in the city.

Michael studied architecture in Aarhus. In 2016, he was selected to join the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ prestigious Society of Artists.
