Evaluation criteria:

Submissions are for single projects only.

Each project is evaluated on its own merit. It is not competing against other entries.

The Jury members cast their votes in separation as opposed to a group forum. The highest overall scoring entries are selected as Winners.

The project must be completed in the last 5 years. It can also be undergoing construction. It can also be a yet-to-be-built project (provided that supporting material is convincing).

The Jury panel evaluates entries based on its creativity, form, and function. The project needs to be clear on its relationship to its environment, its users, and its purpose. Creativity is not enough to be convincing; it needs to show useful function and provide a better living experience for its users, meeting the clients’ expectations. Projects that demonstrate innovation and embracing new technologies, setting new trends, respecting the environment, and pushing boundaries of human ingenuity. Projects with high regard to sustainable building practices, innovation, social impact, and humanitarian issues will earn special attention from the jury.

OPAL ‘Special Awards’

In addition to the open submissions to OPAL, we give 4 ‘Special Awards’ that are nominated exclusively by our jury panel. The four Special Awards are for outstanding projects in Sustainability, Innovation, Social Impact and Lifetime Achievement.

We ask our jury panel to put forward projects for each of the four categories to enter a jury poll. Nominations must be projects within property development, architecture or interior design.

• Lifetime Achievement

Awarded to a person, not a project. A developer, architect, or interior designer whose contributions have had a profound impact and inspiration to the built environment. It can be a living or recently deceased person.

Sustainability

Projects with the intention to reduce or completely eliminate negative environmental impacts through thoughtful design methods.

• Innovation

Projects that shape the future through the use of new technologies, design principles and materials.

• Social Impact

Projects that are tackling social problems to improve people’s lives.

The quality of projects that were submitted this year, in all categories, is a true reflection of the boundless creativity that our industry is famous for. As a result, OPAL has emerged as a prestigious international award that celebrates mind-blowing and functional design, which will inspire designers and architects around the world to reach new heights.
