The philosophy informing GARDE’s design decisions can be summarized under the theme Onkochishin ("learning from the past"). The space features works of artists with ties to Kyoto: a gold leaf wall art and an artwork of stacked wooden blocks inspired by the four gods that protect the cardinal directions of Kyoto (Genbu in the north, Suzaku in the south, Seiryu in the east, and Byakko in the west). The result is a one-of-a-kind space where visitors can experience firsthand the modern traditions, culture unique to Kyoto and contemporary art design.
